A microprocessor hidden under your feet. What can smart athletic shoe insoles do?

According to experts, the walking profile is as unique as each person’s DNA. Thanks to the information collected by modern shoe insoles, the athlete has a chance to expand the knowledge of his or her body.

How do smart shoe inserts work?

A modern technological solution installed in shoes is another manifestation of innovation in the sportswear market. Thanks to a sensor placed in the insole, a specially created program collects a very wide range of data. Electronic devices collect information both while walking, running and even cycling. Despite appearances, intelligent shoe insoles are used not only in sports, but also in medicine. By analyzing relevant parameters, specialists are able to determine the risk of certain diseases and make early corrections to the daily movement.

Motion sensors installed in shoes analyze the specifics of gait, impact force, correct posture, step size or speed of movement. A specially created algorithm collects the collected data and on their basis creates a report that shows the full specifics of the athlete’s gait or run. Some of the created insoles also come with a customized mobile application that provides real-time information and tracks the current location of the athlete.

What data do the sensors collect?

Smart athletic shoe insoles can study an athlete’s movements during a variety of workouts. During them, they collect a range of data that allows them to create a complete picture of how the athlete is moving. Motion sensors can determine and examine, among other things, the level of fatigue, correct technique, the way the foot is positioned, the speed of movement, or the force of pressure. Some of the technology also allows for remote temperature control in the shoe.

An advanced algorithm is also able to create a virtual model of the foot reproducing its way of moving. Smart shoe inserts allow experts to analyze WPP, or Walking Profile Parameters. Researchers are convinced that, just like the DNA code, there is a unique walking profile of each person, the analysis of which can improve their sports performance and prevent injuries or diseases.

Adidas GMR – a project of Adidas, EA SPORTS and Google

Global companies in collaboration created the Adidas GMR insoles. The device combines the world of real physical exertion with the virtual game of FIFA. The smart insoles for gamers are designed for players who play soccer even at an amateur level. Electronic sensors collect data on sprints, passes or strikes performed. The system analyzes the player’s play, monitors his progress and scores each practice. The scores collected during real-world training are awarded to the player’s profile in the FIFA world. The player has the chance to earn bonuses for his team in Ultimate Team and develop his character in the virtual world. The cost of smart insoles from Adidas ranges from PLN 100 to PLN 150.

Smart insoles and medicine

In addition to improving sports performance and bonuses in the virtual football game, smart insoles also have an impact on the diagnosis of certain diseases. Creating an individual foot profile allows to analyze the way of walking, the correctness of the posture of the spine, feet or hips and prevent injuries in advance. According to experts, the data collected by footwear insoles also allows earlier diagnosis of neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s syndrome or Alzheimer’s. This is due to the fact that about 7,000 nerves located in the foot are directly connected to the brain. By analyzing the data of the nervous system, doctors are able to detect movement disorders or disorders of specific nerves responsible for the occurrence of certain diseases.

Intelligent shoe insoles will detect neurological diseases. They will also tell athletes how to increase their performance and warn them of an injury

Every person has a walking profile, much like DNA. Thanks to modern insoles, which enable precise analysis of the walking pattern, it is possible to analyze physical activity, overloads or detect movement disorders accompanying, for example, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease. Microprocessors track in real time how effective disease treatments are. There are more and more shoes on the market that can count the number of steps or use a smartphone to set the right temperature inside the shoe.
